Merson urges Tottenham to pursue Andre Gomes this summer

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur should look at the prospect of signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona when the season comes to a close. The north London outfit decided to part ways with Mousa Dembele at the halfway stage of the season and this has certainly left a void which could be filled at the end of the campaign.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said that Gomes could be the perfect foil for the Capital outfit following his impressive debut Premier League season with Everton on loan, he said: “I like him [Gomes. There is talk of Tottenham coming in for him for £30 million. Again, this is what happens, you have a couple of good games and other teams look at the loan situation and think ‘Oh, he’s only on loan, I’ll take him’. He’s a Tottenham player… He’s a Tottenham player!”

Everton are understood to have already made contact with the Blaugrana regarding a permanent transfer for the Portuguese, but they are certain to face competition with Tottenham and Inter Milan also said to be monitoring the player’s transfer status. Spurs have fared impressively during the current league campaign and they are presently third on the league table after 33 games played.

Despite this, there has been a sense of frustration from the supporters after the lack of transfer spending over the past two transfer windows, but the same could be solved during the summer. Nonetheless, Spurs are facing the risk of potential departures with Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld being fancied to head through the exit door, unless they pen new contracts beyond the summer of 2020.

Tottenham will be in Champions League quarter-final action on Wednesday night where they are scheduled to face Manchester City on the road. Spurs have a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg and it remains to be seen whether they can hold onto the advantage to progress to the next stage.
